Tips & Jigs

A simple jig to determine depth of a bowl.

(This is for lathes where the headstock is fixed.)
Place a square against the front edge of the chuck.
WAM

Draw a line on the lathe bed.
I also filed a shallow groove on the bed and filled the line with a permanent marker.

A simple plywood jig. The left end of the base matches the vertical location of the point.
Make the jig to any depth you want.
WAM

Slide the jig into the bowl until the point touches the inside bottom.
The distance from the left end of the base to the line in the bed indicates the thickness fo the bowl bottom.
This bowl has a bottom about 1" thick. (Tape used to highlight line for photo.)
